La boule d’attelage standard se fixe à l’aide de 2 ou 4 points de fixation. C’est un dispositif qui était très populaire il y a plusieurs années. Aujourd’hui, il est surtout utilisé sur les véhicules utilitaires et est délaissé par les particuliers qui préfèrent l’attelage col de cygne qui est plus esthétique. En effet, le système de fixation de cette boule est particulièrement visible.
L’attelage col de cygne est le système le plus connu de la part des automobilistes. La rotule est fixe mais elle peut se démonter à l’aide d’outils. Une fois celle-ci enlevée, le crochet reste visible. Il est toutefois plus discret que les boules standards car il est partiellement caché par le parechoc.
L’attelage avec rotule amovible sans outils est vraiment très pratique. Il est également connu sous le nom de RDSO. Visuellement, le dispositif ressemble à un attelage col de cygne. Mais pour enlever la rotule, pas besoin d’outils, ce qui présente un gain de temps substantiel. La rotule peut s’enlever horizontalement ou verticalement selon les modèles.
L’attelage avec rotule rétractable permet de ne pas monter et démonter son crochet et sa rotule. D’une simple pression, celle-ci se retrouve cachée entièrement par le parechoc. Le rendu est donc plus esthétique.

Le choix d’un attelage auto se fait en fonction :
- du modèle de votre véhicule : tous les attelages ne vont pas sur tous les véhicules.
- de la fréquence d’utilisation : si vous ne l’utilisez qu’une fois dans l’année, un attelage col de cygne suffit. En revanche, si vous êtes amenés à l’utiliser régulièrement, un crochet avec rotule amovible sans outils peut être plus adapté.
- de la masse tractée : il faut prendre en compte le poids de la remorque ou de la caravane vide mais aussi remplie afin de choisir un dispositif assez puissant pour supporter la charge.
- de la présence ou non d’un faisceau électrique : certains attelages sont vendus avec un faisceau et d’autres non. Dans ce cas, il doit être acheté à part.
